Introduction of Coins
This is yet another low mintage date within a mostly low mintage decade. The silver dollar did not circulate domestically at this time, being worth more than one dollar when measured against gold coins. There is some indication that the coins may have circulated in the Far West, where inflation rendered their bullion premium meaningless, but if so these coins certainly were not preserved. Worn examples are very scarce in any grade, while Mint State coins are genuinely rare. A small cluster of gem and choice pieces have been certified, but there is some likelihood that these include duplicate submissions. Just a single pair of dies produced this small issue, and each is unique to 1854. Therefore, the slight repunching visible on numeral 4 is of no significance. Most examples are well struck, being slightly superior to those of earlier years, though a bit of weakness on the eagle's leg feathers may be seen on some coins.Read More
