Introduction of Coins
Though this issue had a large mintage for its series, survivors are in limited supply. The attrition rate was quite high, with Osburn/Cushing estimating that only a thousand or so pieces exist today. These are spread across four die marriages which resulted from a like number of reverse dies paired with three obverses, OC-1 and OC-2 sharing an obverse die. As none of these dies possess any particularly interesting features, the collecting of this date by die marriages is nearly unknown. Most 1859(P) silver dollars are well struck, with weakness being seen on some in the usual problem areas of Liberty's head, the star centrals and the upper edge of the eagle's right wing (viewer's left). This issue is usually encountered in the higher circulated grades, with well worn pieces and Mint State coins being rare. The certified population at the MS 64 level is likely exaggerated through multiple submissions, and gems are nearly unknown.Read More
