Introduction of Coins

This date enjoyed a generous mintage relative to most entries in the series. Not surprisingly, it is common in circulated grades, while a fair number of Mint State examples have survived. Precious few of these, however, are choice, while gems are exceedingly rare. Some pieces display semi-prooflike fields, but the dies were run long enough that many display gently frosted texture. Most 1841 silver dollars reveal areas of weak striking, most notably at Liberty's head and the top of the eagle's right (viewer's left) wing. The latter area remained subject to weak striking throughout the series, as it was directly opposite the highest relief of the obverse. Four die marriages have been identified for this date. These resulted from the mixing of two obverse dies with two reverse dies in multiple combinations. One of the reverse dies had been used previously to strike 1840 dollars. OC-1 is the scarcest of the four marriages, but the number of persons collecting Seated Liberty Dollars by varieties is too small for any of these varieties to bring a premium.Read More
