Introduction of Coins
This date is the second of three high mintage issues for the years 1841-43. It is common across all grades through lower Mint State. Choice MS examples are available, but true gems are unknown. Most unworn coins reveal gentle, frosty luster, though a few reveal semi-prooflike fields. A certifiably prooflike piece is genuinely rare. Reasonably well struck as a rule, some coins may lack full definition in the stars and Liberty's hair. Seven die marriages are known for this currency strike issue. These resulted from various combinations of six obverses with just two reverses. They vary greatly in relative rarity, but little interest has been shown in collecting this series by die marriages. The co-authors of the definitive reference book on Seated Liberty Dollars, Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing, included a "Top-30" list of the most desirable varieties for the series, and this may result in wider appreciation of variety collecting.Read More
