Introduction of Coins
The small mintage of 1844 currency strike dollars was the product of just a single die pair, the reverse die being unique to this year. Interestingly, the lone obverse die is obviously doubled on the chief of Liberty's shield, readily distinguishing it from the circulated proofs found occasionally in the marketplace (the latter are not doubled). Also, the currency die includes a misplaced date (MPD), duplicate numerals 18 being evident within Liberty's gown. While not truly rare, the 1844 silver dollar is noticeably less often seen than the four preceding dates. Mint State pieces are likewise more scarce than for the common dates, but not as rare as this low mintage would suggest. Choice examples are quite scarce, with only one gem survivor confirmed. Unworn coins typically reveal semi-prooflike fields from the very limited die use. Weakness may be evident in the usual trouble spots of the star centrals and the eagle's upper right wing.Read More
