Introduction of Coins
Circulated examples of this date are comparable in rarity to the 1844 dollar of similar mintage, though Mint State survivors are more scarce. Nearly all of the latter are in low range, with choice pieces being very rare and no gems confirmed. The quality of strike for this issue is similar to most Seated Liberty dollars, with the usual trouble spots being the star centrals and the upper portion of the eagle's right wing. All of the currency strikes were produced with a single pair of dies, most likely during a single press run, as well. The reverse die is unique to this date. Most examples display either one or two die clashings, with the unclashed die state being very elusive.Read More
