Introduction of Coins
This common date in the Seated Liberty Dollar series was coined from just a single obverse die that was combined with two different reverses. The OC-1 marriage is more common than OC-2, but there are not enough interested specialists to prompt any premium value to these varieties. OC-1 does feature some repunching of numeral 1, but it slight enough to be missed on a worn coin. Because so few dies produced so many coins, most examples display frosty luster. A few semi-prooflike coins may be encountered, these from fresh or repolished dies. The typical 1846 is well struck overall, though there may be some weakness on the usual trouble spots of the star centrals and the eagle's upper right wing. A fair number of choice Mint State coins have been certified, but gems are quite rare.Read More
