Introduction of Coins
This is a surprisingly scarce date in higher grades. The San Francisco Mint was concentrating on the production of double eagles at the time, and just 10,000 gold dollars were coined. Like most early S-Mint coinage, nearly all of these gold dollars immediately entered circulation. Probably not more than a couple dozen Mint State examples have survived, indicating the rarity of Choice AU and near-Mint coins such as this one.
