Introduction of Coins
Jeff Garrett:For the last year that gold dollars were minted at the Charlotte Mint, the pride of quality workmanship was totally absent. The 1859-C gold dollar was issued poorly struck, with numerous and assorted planchet defects. The borders are unusually broad and are always weakly struck on some portion. With the lowest mintage of all gold dollars from the Charlotte Mint, the 1859-C is scarce in all grades. Mint State coins are very rare, with the finest graded being MS 63. This coin sold for $15,275 in June, 2015. Grading poorly produced gold coins such as these can be difficult, to say the least. One must consider the remaining luster and the various planchet problems to arrive at a net grade. Read More
