Introduction of Coins
Like most Philadelphia Mint silver coins of the Civil War years the 1863 silver dollar was coined in small quantity and very little circulation. It's likely that those produced were retained at the Philadelphia Mint to pay depositors of silver bullion or to accommodate the rare request for this denomination from collectors and visitors to the mint. It's not surprising then that this date is disproportionately available at or very near Mint State, while worn examples are as rare or more so. Enough choice pieces survive to satisfy advanced series collectors, but the number of gems is very small. The 1863 silver dollar tends to be well struck and semi-prooflike, the dies having been little used. Just one pair of dies was utilized to produce the currency coins, and it's thus possible that the entire mintage was completed in a single press run. The reverse die was unique to this date.Read More
