Introduction of Coins
The year 1865 continued the ongoing advance in the number of silver dollars coined annually since 1862, yet this mintage is still modest overall. This production obviously occurred in spurts separated by weeks or months, as no fewer than four die pairs are known for currency strikes. Four obverse dies were paired with two reverses, one of them the same die used for 1864's mintage, and this resulted in four marriages total. There are pronounced differences in the number of coins surviving from each marriage, but this is solely of academic interest, since few collectors are seeking more than one example of this date. Most 1865 silver dollars are seen in the higher circulated grades or the lower Mint State grades. Both well worn pieces and gems are rare, the number of MS 64 examples certified most likely representing unsuccessful attempts to achieve the coveted MS 65 grade. The majority of Mint State pieces are well struck and semi-prooflike.Read More
