Introduction of Coins
The addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the silver and gold coins in 1866 prompted greater interest by collectors in purchasing proofs. Sales rose nearly 50% over those of 1865, and the majority of these coins still exist, though many are impaired to varying degrees. There remains more than the usual interest in proofs dated 1866 by collectors seeking a first-year type coin bearing the motto. The quality of the U. S. Mint's proofs as made was very high throughout most of the 1860s. There are a fair number of gem survivors, and these include enough Cameo proofs to please the most advanced collectors. Two die marriages are known, these resulting from the pairing of two obverses with a single reverse. Interestingly, one of the obverse dies was also paired with the single die used for 1866 proof dollars lacking the motto.Read More
