Introduction of Coins
Though numismatic journals reported the addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the nation's silver and gold coins in 1866, collectors don't seem to have made any effort to save currency strikes with the new motto. Instead, the sale of proofs advanced this year, only to return to normal levels in 1867. The 1866 silver dollar is more available in overall numbers than those of 1862-65, due in part to the steady advancement of mintages throughout this decade. Though this year's production wasn't much higher than that of 1865, it's clear that more pieces have survived. The usual pattern is in place, with coins clustered in the higher circulated grades and lower Mint State grades. Gems are available to the most advanced collectors, but they are no more often seen than for other dates of the period. Just a single pair of dies was used for circulating 1866 silver dollars, and the reverse die is unique to this year.Read More
