Introduction of Coins
The mintage of silver dollars in 1867 declined slightly from the year before, but this issue is only moderately scarce. Typical of the several preceding dates, the certified population is concentrated in the higher circulated grades and lower Mint State grades. Some of this is due to the fact that worn examples often are accompanied by flaws that keep them from achieving numeric grades. At the choice and gem levels of Mint State, pieces are available in very limited supply. Like most silver dollars of the 1860s, the majority of MS coins are well struck and semi-prooflike. A single die pair produced the entire mintage of 1867 circulating pieces, and this suggests just one, or perhaps two, press runs. The date was repunched counterclockwise from its first impression, with duplication visible on all numerals.Read More
