Introduction of Coins
Two die marriages have been identified for this issue. Two obverse dies were paired with a single reverse, this being the one used also for proof silver dollars dated 1866-70. Both obverse dies feature date punching varieties: the first has the tops of numerals 18 punched into the rim below the date, while the second shows minor repunching of the date, including slight tripling on numeral 1. Interest in the collecting of proofs by die marriages is quite limited, but the misplaced date (MPD) variety offers some visual appeal. Gems, including ones certified as Cameo, exist in sufficient numbers to provide for advanced collectors, though Ultra Cameo proofs are quite rare.Read More
