Introduction of Coins
While the Philadelphia Mint may have coined 1,000 proofs of this date, the numbers surviving suggest that some portion of this number remained on hand at the end of the year. The usual course of action was to melt the unsold proofs, though at various times during the latter decades of the 19th Century the Mint was known to simply mix these pieces in with deliveries of currency strikes. The absence of Details graded specimen suggests that the remainders were destroyed. A single obverse die was paired with three reverses for a like number of marriages. One reverse die was unique to this year, another had been used previously in 1869, and the third was a veteran of proof silver dollar production during the years 1866-69.Read More
