Introduction of Coins
Though it has a mintage similar to that of 1869, the silver dollar of 1870 is much more available across all grades. This indicates that it was not shipped overseas in large numbers, the failure of American standard dollars to find a market in the Far East precluding the reason for additional exports. These coins circulated domestically and became more worn than most preceding Seated Liberty Dollars. While Mint State survivors often are not well struck, they exist in great enough numbers to meet the demand from advanced collectors. Gems, of course, are scarce. This date is found with either frosty or semi-prooflike fields. Some ten die marriages are known for the currency edition, and this suggests that minting occurred sporadically throughout the year. Seven obverse dies were paired with three reverses, the latter all being unique to this date. There are just enough minor characteristics to identify these dies, though none have features that would make them interesting to variety collectors.Read More
