Introduction of Coins
The 1871 issue is a good date for a collector seeking a proof type coin of the Seated Liberty Dollar with motto. A fair number of gems have been certified for the more advanced collectors, while a generous supply of PF 63-64 remain available, as well. It was the fashion for the U. S. Mint to strike proofs having at least some degree of contrast between brilliant fields and frosted relief elements, so certified Cameo and Ultra Cameo proofs do exist in far more limited numbers. The two die marriages of proof 1871 dollars utilized a single reverse die unique to this date with two obverses. There are no particularly interesting features to any of these dies, and the collecting of more than one piece per date is quite rare among proof specialists.Read More
