Introduction of Coins
Though a very low mintage issue, the 1872-CC dollar is more often seen that Carson City dollars of the years immediately preceding and following. Osburn and Cushing estimated that 250 pieces survive in all grades. Examples are found over a broad range of grades, though many of the circulated pieces are impaired in one or more ways. Perhaps two dozen or so are known in Mint State, most at the low end of that range. Choice and gem examples are very rare. About Uncirculated and Mint State pieces typically reveal semi-prooflike fields, since the dies weren't utilized long enough to develop a frosty texture. Not surprisingly, just a single pair of dies was employed, and its reverse is one used previously for 1870-CC dollars. Most 1872-CC silver dollars are reasonably well struck, though the word LIBERTY is a bit weak, as is typical of many Carson City silver coins.Read More
