Introduction of Coins
Mintage of half eagles at the brand new Carson City Mint began on March 1 with an initial production of 400 coins. After that date, further half eagles were coined, and the total mintage for the year was pegged at 7,675 coins. Only about 50 or 60 examples have survived the decades since they were coined, and as most saw extensive use in western commerce, very few high quality examples still exist today. Perhaps only a dozen AU or finer coins are known.
