With over 3.1 million pieces struck, the 1880 $5 gold half eagle is quite common today, even in uncirculated grades. However, it is not quite as common in gem as the 1881, with about half as many pieces known. Proofs are extremely rare as they had an original mintage of a mere 36 pieces.
