From 1813 to 1834 the price of gold bullion exceeded the face value of these half eagles, leading to widespread melting. Despite generous mintages, only a handful of survivors are known of many of the higher-gold-content dates from 1813 through 1834. Such is the case here, with about 20 to 30 examples known from the original mintage of 140,594 pieces.
