Introduction of Coins
In 2014, the National Baseball Hall of Fame celebrated its 75th anniversary. In honor of this and Baseball's place as America's past-time, the U.S. Mint released a series of coins including a clad 50-cent piece, silver dollar, and $5 gold piece. The subject matter, plus the fact that these were concave, a first for the U.S. Mint, made these hot sellers. In fact, the 50,000 $5 gold coins sold out in the very first day. The silver dollars also reached sellout levels with over 99% of the 400,000 limit distributed. While the half dollars didn't come near to selling out, more Baseball half dollars were sold (391,454) than any other commemorative half dollar since the 1994 World Cup issue.Read More
