Introduction of Coins

In 1954 the U. S. Mint determined that it was more cost effective to supply the western states by shipping Denver Mint coins than by making them locally in San Francisco. As a result, just two denominations were struck at the San Francisco Mint during the first three months of 1955 before coining ended there. Collectors were well aware of these developments, and the cents and dimes dated 1955-S were massively hoarded. Examples of the latter remain extremely plentiful through MS 67, though precious few of these display FT details. Knowing that coining was to be discontinued, the San Francisco Mint ran its dies to the point of failure, and 1955-S dimes typically are quite mushy. A single RPM variety is known, but it's quite minor.Read More
