Though its mintage was lower than for 1946 dimes of the other mints, the 1946-S issue was widely hoarded and presents little challenge to the collector seeking a nice specimen. Certified pieces are common through the grade of MS 67, though only a small percentage of the surviving total merits the FT designation. Most S-Mint dimes of the 1940s-50s are found poorly struck from worn and/or overpolished dies, so collectors should be alert for examples coined from fresh dies that have full details, rather than focusing solely on the torch lines. 1946-S dimes are rich in doubled-die varieties, especially on the reverse. These, however, are of limited interest, and most variety enthusiasts favor the many repunched mintmarks known for this issue.
