Introduction of Coins
The excitement generated by the scarce Small Date proof cents of 1960 created countless new coin collectors and speculators, setting off a real boom in the hobby that peaked four years later. The influence of all this superheated activity was a near doubling of proof set sales in 1961 over the previous year's total. 1961 proof dimes are plentiful through PF 69. The great increase in the number of fresh dies employed led to a relatively high availability of both Cameo and Ultra Cameo specimens. While certainly not common, there appear to be enough of these to meet the needs of advanced collectors. At least two DDR varieties are known, but these pale in comparison to the more dramatic ones for 1960.Read More
