Introduction of Coins
This issue is similar in both mintage and rarity to 1930-S dimes. Both were partially withheld from release until a few years had passed, and this provided an opportunity for collectors and dealers to set aside a few Mint State rolls of each. Even in gem Mint State, this issue is not rare, but its low mintage had given it a popularity that keeps values above other issues of similar availability. The percentage of 1931-S dimes having Full Bands is very small, and the Census numbers clearly reflect this fact. An extremely minor doubled-die obverse is known affecting the date. Were it not for the small number of such varieties known for this series, collectors probably would overlook it altogether. As it is, this variety has become quite desirable in higher grades.Read More
