Introduction of Coins
Sales were unusually high for proof dimes in 1892, due to the novelty of Barber's design. Many of these coins were obtained by tourists visiting the Philadelphia Mint who purchased them as souvenirs of the occasion. This accounts for the high percentage of impaired pieces known today, as such persons had no knowledge of proper coin handling. Despite this attrition, unimpaired survivors remain fairly plentiful over a span of grades. Gems are not especially scarce, especially in comparison to later dates that were issued in smaller quantities. Cameo pieces are readily available, though seldom in high grades. Ultra Cameo examples are very rare.Read More
