ONE DIME
Introduction of Coins
The Philadelphia Mint coined 1,000 proofs of the 1860 dime in anticipation of sales that failed to materialize. Actual sales of complete silver proof sets topped out at 527 that year, and it's believed that the remaining pieces were melted at year's end. All confirmed 1860 proof dimes have the first obverse style on which only five lines appear above the shield banner. A single proof has been reported with the modified obverse showing six lines, but this coin is untraced. Cameo proofs are very scarce but sufficiently available that the advanced collector may aspire to own one.Read More
