The Mint's estimation of potential proof sales proved way off the mark again in 1861. Reportedly, 1,000 pieces were coined, but at least 600 were destroyed after the end of the calendar year. Walter Breen speculated that some of these may have instead been released to circulation, but there's no proof of this.
