Introduction of Coins

1861 was the final year in which silver coinage circulated freely before the Civil War prompted the hoarding of all coins during 1862. Silver would not return to circulation in most of the nation until the mid 1870s. This issue is common in circulated grades and fairly plentiful in the lower Mint State range. The original obverse hub used for 1860 and part of 1861 was a bit shallow in its details, and a new hub was created this year which resulted in dimes that were more durable in circulation. These varieties are easily distinguished by the number of vertical lines appearing above the LIBERTY banner. Type 1 (photos) has just five lines visible, while Type 2 has six lines representing three red stripes. The five-line obverse is more scarce, but collectors have shown little interest in this feature alone. Collectable die states displaying rusted dies are known for each obverse hub type.Read More
