Introduction of Coins
The 1861 S dime is a very scarce coin across all grades. Mint State examples are genuinely rare. Most examples are a bit weakly struck in the upper left portion of the wreath, as well as at Liberty's head and foot. The rims are often ill defined, which was a chronic problems for the San Francisco Mint during the 1860s. Perhaps it was the shape or finishing of its collars that led to excessive wear of the dies in the border area.Read More
