It appears that the U. S. Mint accepted reality with respect to proof sales this year, coining only 550 pieces. Most of these sold as part of the silver proof sets (which also included the minor issues), but a few unsold pieces were melted during 1863. Two die pairs were employed for the 1862 proofs, though collectors take little of minor distinctions in proof coins.
