Introduction of Coins
This issue's mintage doesn't suggest a very common coin, but then 1862 was not a normal year. Banks suspended specie (gold and silver coin) payments in December of 1861. Gold coins were hoarded almost immediately, and silver disappeared from circulation by the spring of '62. As a result of such hoarding, many 1862(P) dimes remained idle in vaults until discovered years later. A fair number of these found their way to collectors, making this issue still common today through the mid grades of Mint State. All dimes of 1862-91 feature the sharper, Type 2 obverse having six lines visible above the LIBERTY banner. The most desirable variety pairs a repunched date obverse with a gouged reverse.Read More
