Introduction of Coins
This was another small mintage effected primarily for the Mint's own account. Few of these coins circulated when new, but it's obvious that some entered circulation after paper currency achieved value parity with silver coins in the mid 1870s. Low-end Mint State survivors are seemingly as common as worn examples, which keeps the value spread relatively small across the grades through MS 60. Just two die pairs are known for this date, and both struck proofs as well as currency pieces. One obverse shows a very minor repunched date, but this carries no premium.Read More
