Introduction of Coins
Six obverse dies were shipped to the San Francisco Mint for 1866 dime coinage, but it appears that only two of these were used. Paired with two reverse dies leftover from earlier shipments, the result was three known die marriages. This issue is rare across all grades, with Mint State pieces being especially elusive. Most 1866 S dimes were poorly struck at Liberty's head and the opposing design elements of the bow knot and mintmark. The mintmark, in particular, is so shallow on this date that many examples have been offered as 1866(P) dimes in the past, and only a study of die characteristics has enabled authenticators to sort out the confusion.Read More
