Introduction of Coins
1909 proved to be the final year of coining at the New Orleans Mint, but that facility turned out a respectable number of dimes before suspending such operations June 30. Survivors are often poorly struck, the coin illustrated above being exceptionally nice. Mint State pieces are known in fair numbers, and only gems are rare. Circulated examples are only moderately scarce in the higher grades. The David Lawrence book illustrates what is labeled as an O over inverted D variety, but the subject coin appears to display only pronounced strike doubling. This listing is omitted from the Kevin Flynn book, so that author evidently does not give it credibility.Read More
