Introduction of Coins
The Philadelphia Mint employed three die pairs in coining the dimes of 1867, one for proofs and two for currency pieces. Production of the latter reached its low point for the decade, with just 6,000 coined. The 625 proofs of 1867 represented a smaller figure than in 1866, but it was higher than for the years 1862-65. Both Cameo and Ultra Cameo specimens are elusive for this date, and many surviving proofs cannot be numerically graded, due to harsh cleaning and other impairments.Read More
