Introduction of Coins
This issue had the lowest mintage of any dime during the 1860s, and it's a recognized rarity across all grades. Circulated examples are nearly equal in rarity to Mint State pieces, and some worn examples are actually proofs that escaped into commerce. Of the three die pairs used for 1867 dimes, that for proofs was exclusive, so careful examination will distinguish the true currency pieces. Most Mint State survivors are well struck, except at the upper left of the wreath, and they tend to be somewhat prooflike. The dies produced so few coins that they scarcely lost their original polish.Read More
