Introduction of Coins
Though moderately scarce in Mint State, the 1869 S dime is clearly more available in circulated grades than other San Francisco dimes of the 1860s. Most examples are weakly struck at Liberty's head and portions of the wreath, most notably the bow knot. Though the San Francisco Mint received six obverse dies for 1869 dimes, only two die pairs are known for this issue. The mintmarks of the reverses have been described as "Small Thin S" and "Small Weak S," respectively, but these appear to be the same punch in different states of clarity. Weak or partially filled mintmarks are a hallmark of San Francisco Mint dimes from the 1860s in general, but the problem is especially acute with the 1869 S issue.Read More
