The mintage of dimes at Philadelphia dipped a bit in 1877, as the falling price of silver brought millions of old dimes out of hiding. These had disappeared in 1862 when the circulation of non-redeemable paper currency drove silver from circulation, but these notes now passed at the same value as silver. Unlike the previous year, Type 2 reverses predominate for 1877(P) dimes, though the Type 1 coins are only moderately scarce. In overall numbers this issue is common in worn condition, and even Mint State gems are available to the type collector. A number of minor repunched date varieties are noted, but these have attracted little interest. More appealing is a misplaced date variety in which the base of a numeral 1 is seen below Liberty's gown and centered above the 8 of the date.Read More
