ONE DIME
Introduction of Coins
As the year 1881 dawned, the Treasury and its sub-Treasuries still had ample stocks of dimes on hand. The modest mintage of dimes for this year reflects a conscious decision to produce non-proofs whether they were needed or not. Unlike the 1879-80 dimes, which had similarly low mintages and remain common today, a certain portion of the 1881 total was abruptly needed for commerce when the Treasury vaults were drawn down by renewed demand. Thus, this date is noticeably more scarce than dimes dated 1879-80. As in those two years, however, the surviving population has a much higher percentage of Mint State pieces than for years in which dimes were coined by the millions.Read More
