Introduction of Coins
1883 was the final year of 1,000+ mintages of proof silver coins until 1892. This is not surprising, as 1883 was also the final year that the proof-only trade dollar was offered to collectors. Walter Breen reported that some of these remained unsold at year's end and were melted in 1884. Two die marriages were used to coin proofs, Fortin-103 and F-119 (photos). With so many proofs produced, gems are not especially rare. Cameo pieces are also collectable, though not common, while Ultra Cameo proofs are very rare indeed.Read More
