Introduction of Coins
The trend toward restoration of silver coinage to circulation continued in 1871, as the Philadelphia Mint's production of dimes nearly doubled over 1870. 1871(P) dimes are slightly scarce in the higher circulated grades and become genuinely rare at the gem Mint State level. Researcher Gerry Fortin has identified some 14 obverse dies used for this issue, though one of these was restricted to proof strikings. These were paired with 13 reverses for a total of 14 marriages.Read More
