Introduction of Coins
After the miniscule mintage of dimes at San Francisco in 1870, this year's output returned to the levels achieved in 1868-69. For some reason, however, this date is tougher to locate than those others, and Mint State survivors are particularly elusive. Two each of obverse and reverse dies were used in three marriages. Weak or incomplete mintmarks appear to be the norm for this issue. 1871 S dimes are also notable for weakness at Liberty's head and the wreath bow, the coin illustrated being a good example of this.Read More
