ONE DIME
Introduction of Coins
As in the previous years, 1872's mintage of proof dimes was in excess of actual demand, and an unknown quantity of unsold remainders was melted the following year. Two die marriages are known for 1872, each employing separate obverse and reverse dies. One obverse displays both repunching of numerals 72 and the lower half of a 2 boldly punched into Liberty's base above the 7 of the date. This is a popular variety that does command a premium (photos). Ultra Cameo proofs are all but unknown, while Cameo examples are quite scarce.Read More
