Introduction of Coins
Though Breen records that four die pairs were shipped to San Francisco for dime coinage in November of 1871, just a single marriage is known for 1872 S dimes. This features a small, tightly packed mintmark that would be typical of most S-Mint Seated Dimes for the next several years. This letter is often seen filled within the loops. 1872 S dimes are moderately scarce in the lower circulated grades and very scarce in grades approaching Mint State. Truly unworn pieces are rare, though enough examples exist to the satisfy the demand from advanced series collectors. These are usually weakly struck at Liberty's head and her base, as well as the upper left of the wreath.Read More
