ONE DIME
Introduction of Coins
This issue was coined in large numbers, as it was anticipated that federal paper currency would shortly achieve value parity with silver coins. This did not come to pass for another couple of years, but the new issue of dimes featured opposed arrowheads to signify a very slight increase in weight. This was done in a nod to the Metric System, adoption of which was considered during the 1870s. 1873 Arrows Dimes are surprisingly scarce in Mint State for an issue of more than two million pieces. Gems are especially prized for their status as two-year-only type coins. Gerry Fortin recorded 24 die marriages, all but one of these being unique uses of each die. Only Obverse 11 appears to have been paired with two reverse dies. The most collectable variety is doubled-die obverse F-103/FS-101.Read More
