All proof 1873 dimes without arrowheads at the date were coined in January and February and feature the Closed 3 date logotype that the chief coiner found so objectionable for its resemblance to an 8. These were struck with a single die pair, and an unknown portion of the 600 piece mintage was destroyed as obsolete on July 10.
