This issue is slightly scarce in lower grades and genuinely rare at or near Mint State. Gems are very rare and seldom seen. The weakness at Liberty's head so typical of this coin type is common for most 1889 S dimes. The Small S mintmark (photos) is the more common variety, even though it is a throwback to years earlier.
